How do we provide students with the best education?
For a long time, we have known that the traditional model of education instruction is outdated, passive, and ignoring many student needs. Today’s learners are very much connected to technology, but we see technology as a tool to stay connected with people or to play games. Milton Chen discusses in Education Nation, how innovation happens, “take the best elements of what has been, integrate diverse sources of knowledge and talent, and create a breakthrough that hasn’t been imagined before.” While I’m not not suggesting that computers and technology are the future classroom teachers, it is important to consider the ways in which learners can utilize technology as a tool for the classroom.
Blended learning has become a topic of interest in education. This style of learning blends the use of digital and face to face content and activity. The International Association for K-12 Online Learning states blended learning involves “learning that combines two modes of instruction, online and face-to-face, but at potentially different points in time.”
The Blended Learning for Alliance School Transformation (BLAST) is using this style of learning to fight the traditional passive way of teaching. The organization realized that this form of teaching did not serve every student. Their classrooms now include three different stations for learning: Direct instruction with small groups, collaborative station, and individual online learning. In this way, they receive quality time with the teacher, but they have the flexibility to learn at their own pace.
The BLAST organization caters to middle school and high school students, but blended learning can be a great way to encourage little learners how to see the computer as a tool for education. In Monique Markoff’s 2014 TEDTalk, she suggests, “The computer is just a tool. The same way we wouldn’t hand a student a text book and say ‘great, educate yourself,’ we can’t expect to hand them a computer and say the same thing.” As parents and teachers, it is important to find a rhythm to technology integration, but blended learning provides a framework that sees the teacher as a necessary component.
The National Math + Science Initiative points out that blended learning encompasses several benefits within the classroom. As we prepare our 21st Century learners for the real world, we hope to provide them with the best education possible. By supplementing materials with technology, learners will have the opportunity to learn beyond the textbook to gain a wider, global understanding of a subject. And unlike classroom time, technology does not have limited hours! Around the clock access makes technology an equalizer for educational access.
A Tool for Blended Learning
How can blended learning happen in your classroom? The A+ Tutorsoft program allows the learner or teacher to print certain lesson plans with the ease of accessing online videos, tutorials, as well as assessments and grading. One of the beneficial features of the A+ platform is the dashboard that enables parent/teachers to monitor the learner’s progress. In addition, each grade level and subject is completely outlined with a scope and sequence. This includes detailed videos featuring both audio and visual components. The blend of online and printable material that this program offers makes it a beneficial supplemental resources or math reinforcement.
Math makes so many people cringe, yet it’s increasingly important for students to have confidence in their math skills. Unfortunately, for those who are not big fans, math is like a muscle that we have to keep working on. While standards for math continue to evolve, so does the pace and breadth of material that needs to be learned each year.
Luckily, Educents offers a variety of programs to help math learners! A+ Tutorsoft Inc. is an interactive program suited for any individual with strong or weak math skills. Whether you are a parent, homeschooler, or teacher, it is important to consider how we assess and track our student’s math progress.
Hands-off, hands-on math curriculum
Take the pressure out of grading & assessing your future mathematician with the A+ Tutorsoft program! The accessible online program also offers printed PDF content for kindergarten through high school math learners. Bias, distractions, or “bad days” no longer have to be attached to grading. The platform’s adaptive technology provides instant feedback as well as step-by-step solutions for each problem. This is a time saver because you can spend less time grading and explaining, and more time focusing on the areas where your learner(s) needs support.
Empower your kids to love math
The “hands-off, hands-on” A+ Tutorsoft platform allows learners to explore the multi-sensory and multi-media interactive program without being constrained by a lesson plan or text book. The platform can be a curriculum or supplementary resource, and instructors can view the learner’s progress as well as the areas that need more support through the “Parent Role.” You will also have around the clock support and examples.
